50 Years, 50 Titans: The Marsh Family
It’s time to spotlight another group of Titan alumni swimmers, all from the same family. Andrew, Matthew and Megan are three out the 5 five swimmers in their family that shared some of their best swim memories and achievements with us.
Andrew Marsh
Andrew attended Jamestown Highschool and then continued on to attend West Virginia University. His impressive swim career only excelled as he transitioned from high school to college. His senior at West Virginia competing in the Big XII Conference Championship, Andrew took 1st place in the 100 yard backstroke, 3rd in the 100 yard butterfly and 3rd in the 100 yard freestyle.
That same year, 2016, Andrew competed in the US Olympic Team Trials in four events he qualified for: 50 yard Freestyle (placed 102th), 100 yard Freestyle (placed 46th), 100 yard Backstroke (placed 20th), and the 100 yard Butterfly (finished 73rd). Impressive results as some of these events had over 175 swimmers competing!
You can still find Andrew near the swimming pool these day as he is currently coaching the National Prep group for Lakeside Aquatic Club in Dallas, Texas.
Fun Fact about Andrew:
He remembers swimming his freshman year at Sectionals where he didn’t make any individual event cut times but competed in the relays, and the fun competition swimming on those B relay teams trying to beat the A relays.
Q: When did you joins Titans?
A: Joined Titans in 2007
Q; Favorite memory being a Titan?
A: Going out to Junior Nationals with Alec Pokornowski and convincing Coach Scott to let me get Chipotle if I went a best time in the 100 back, hit the lane rope three times and still ended up getting that chipotle!
Q: Most dreaded event to swim?
A: Never did any hard events.... just swam 50s and 100s in club but definitely should have been tougher and swam the 200s of stroke more, would have helped me in college big time.
Matt Marsh
Matt also attended Jamestown High School and swam on the varsity team. During his Junior year, Matt broke the Section VI record in winning the state winning the state championship in the 100-yard freestyle. He was the only Section VI swimmer to win a state title this year. Following in Andrew’s footsteps, he attended West Virginia University and swam all four years, with great achievements in his 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke.
Fun Fact About Matt:
He is a triplet with brother Mitchell and sister Megan.
Q: When did you start as a Titan?
A: The first meet I ever swam with the Titans was at Cleveland State. I still remember how friendly everyone was and how helpful Tim and Scott were.
Q: Best part about being a Titan?
A: My favorite part about being a Titan was how close the team was. Even though I have been done swimming for a while, I am still in a group chat with a few other former Titan swimmers, and we still talk to this day.
Q: Best memory of Titans?
A: My favorite part of being a Titan was being in some of the relays at faster meets. Getting to race other teams at the Pittsburgh Christmas Meet or in Ithaca at Sectionals was a lot of fun.
Q: What would be your most dreaded event to swim?
A: My most dreaded event to swim was the 200 fly and that’s why I never did it.
Megan Marsh
Megan, along wither brothers, also attended Jamestown High School, where she was a vital member of the swim team. She holds five swimming records at the school! After high school graduation, she went on to attend James Madison University and had a successful swim career all four years she attended. She is ranked top ten at the University in the 100 yard Individual Medley, 100 yard Breaststroke and 200 yard Breaststroke. Also ranked in the top 10 at James Madison University are her relay teams for the 400 yard Freestyle Relay, 200 yard Medley (both in 2019 and 2020), 400 yard Medley Replay (three times in 2017, 2018 and 2020).
Fun Facts about Megan:
She is a Section VI 100m breaststroke record holder with a time of 1:03.58, ranking third at NYSPHAA, and the 200m IM with a time of 2:07.41, 11th at NYSPHAA
As a Titan, she was a Junior National Qualifier, while earning Most Versatile-Outstanding Performer
Recorded a season-best time of 1:02.57 in the 100 breaststroke to claim the bronze at the 2020 CAA Championships.
A member of the 400 freestyle relay that took the gold at the 2020 CAA Championships.
We asked Megan the same questions we ask all alumni swimmers and coaches, here is what she had to say:
Q: When did you start as a Titan?
A: I started swimming for the Titans at 10 years old with my 3 brothers.
Q: What is the best part about being a Titan?
A: The best part about being a Titan was the team atmosphere. Everyone was always so welcoming whenever I walked on deck. Every coach and teammate I had was truly invested in helping me become a better swimmer and teammate.
Q: What is your best memory of Titans?
A: Some of my favorite memories were team dinners, team sleepovers, and getting subway at every travel meet thanks to Coach Scott!
Q: What would be your most dreaded event to swim?
A: 200 breaststroke long course
